Short answer: no, not at the doses in a capsule — and the organ this category is built on is one of the least iron-rich in the animal. Beef liver carries 4.9 mg of iron per 100 grams. Beef spleen carries 44.6 mg. Almost every supplement sold on the strength of iron is built on liver.

We make a beef organ supplement for women, and ours does not contain spleen either. Read this as arithmetic you can redo rather than as advice, and check every figure against the USDA entries linked below.

Which beef organ actually has the iron?

Spleen, by a factor of nine over liver. This is the fact the category is built to avoid, and it is public, free and two clicks away in the USDA's own database.

Liver is not the iron organ. It is the vitamin A, B12 and copper organ, and it is genuinely exceptional at those — 59.3 mcg of B12 and 9.76 mg of copper per 100 grams. Iron is the nutrient liver is merely ordinary at. A hundred grams of it carries roughly what a hundred grams of kidney or heart carries, and about a ninth of what spleen carries.

How much iron is in a capsule serving?

A negligible amount, and the arithmetic is not close. A typical two-capsule serving of a beef organ supplement weighs a few hundred milligrams of dried powder. Ours is 600 mg. Freeze-drying concentrates the tissue by removing water, so a milligram of powder carries more than a milligram of fresh organ — but the starting point is 4.9 mg of iron in a hundred grams of liver, and a serving is not a hundred grams.

Run it at the generous end and the answer does not change. Even treating 600 mg of freeze-dried liver as though it stood in for several grams of fresh tissue, the iron in a daily serving lands in the region of a tenth of a milligram — against a requirement of 18 mg a day for a woman aged 19 to 50.

We are deliberately not publishing a precise per-serving iron figure, because we have not assayed iron in our finished product and neither, as far as we can find, has anyone else in this category. What we can say is that the order of magnitude is not in dispute. If a beef organ supplement is your iron strategy, you do not have an iron strategy.

Losses are higher in menstruating women because of blood loss, which is the whole reason for the gap — and it is why the requirement falls back to 8 mg after menopause. Note the shape of it. A woman aged 19 to 50 needs 2.25 times as much iron as a man of the same age, usually from a smaller plate of food. That is a real nutritional problem, and it is the reason iron appears in the marketing of almost everything sold to women. The problem is real. The capsule is not the answer to it.

Is heme iron really better absorbed?

Yes, and the NIH says so plainly: heme iron has better bioavailability than non-heme iron. Heme iron is the form found in meat, seafood, poultry and organ meat. Non-heme iron is the form in plants and in most fortified foods, and its absorption is pushed around by everything eaten alongside it — vitamin C helps, phytate hinders.

That is a genuine advantage for animal foods, and it is the strongest true thing in this category's marketing. It is also not a rescue for the arithmetic above. Better absorption of a negligible amount is still a negligible amount. A well-absorbed tenth of a milligram does not close an 18 mg requirement.

Where it does matter is at the plate rather than the capsule: a portion of beef, or an actual serving of liver, delivers iron in a form your body handles well. That is an argument for eating organ meat, not for a supplement dose of it.

Which women's formulas contain spleen?

Very few, and ours is not one of them. We audited 59 beef organ supplements from 43 brands, sixteen of them marketed to women. Spleen appears in the general multi-organ blends far more often than in the women's ones — the women's category is built around liver plus reproductive tissue, which is a positioning decision rather than an iron decision.

Women Bloom contains liver, ovary, kidney, heart and uterus. No spleen. If our own pitch were iron, that would be a formulation we could not defend — which is why our pitch is not iron, and why every dose is published so you can check what is and is not in it.

Whether a given product contains spleen is usually answerable in ten seconds from the label. Whether it contains a useful amount of it is usually not answerable at all, because 17 of the 40 multi-organ products we audited publish no per-organ amounts whatsoever. What to do instead if your iron is low

Get it measured, then treat it with something dosed for the job. Iron deficiency is diagnosed on a blood test — ferritin, along with haemoglobin — not on how tired you feel, because fatigue has a long list of causes and iron is only one of them.

Iron supplements dosed for repletion carry amounts in the tens of milligrams. That is two to three orders of magnitude more iron than an organ capsule delivers, and it is also why they are worth taking under guidance rather than casually: too much iron is its own problem, and some people should not be adding any. If you suspect your iron is low, the useful next step is a doctor and a blood test, not a different supplement.

None of that makes organ supplements pointless. It makes them a different product for a different purpose — food-form vitamin A, B12, copper and riboflavin, in the proportions the animal had them.* We set out what that is and is not worth in the complete guide to beef organ supplements for women.

So why does the category talk about iron at all?

Because it is the one nutrient where a woman's requirement is unambiguously higher than a man's, and because liver is famous for it. The fame is partly deserved and partly inherited from an era when liver was compared against the rest of the plate rather than against other organs.

There is also a simpler reason. Iron is a nutrient people already believe they need, and it needs no explaining. Ovary powder needs a great deal of explaining. Iron does the persuading, and the formula is built on something else.

We would rather say that out loud than benefit from it quietly. The honest case for this category is variety in food form and a short list of nutrients liver genuinely excels at.* Iron is not on that list.

Common questions

Will beef organ supplements raise my ferritin?

There is no trial testing that, and the amount of iron involved makes it unlikely at capsule doses. If your ferritin is low enough to matter, it is low enough to warrant a doctor rather than a supplement bought on a claim.

Is beef liver a good source of iron?

As a food, it is a reasonable one — 4.9 mg per 100 grams in a well-absorbed form. As a capsule, no, because a capsule contains a tiny fraction of 100 grams. The word doing the work in that sentence is the serving size, not the organ.

Does vitamin C help?

It improves absorption of non-heme iron, the plant form. Heme iron is already absorbed well and is much less affected by what it is eaten with. Taking vitamin C alongside an organ capsule is not harmful; it is just not the lever people think it is.

Which organ has the most iron?

Spleen, at 44.6 mg per 100 g raw, followed by lung at 7.95 mg. Liver, kidney and heart cluster together between 4.3 and 4.9 mg — heart’s real distinction is CoQ10 rather than iron, as we work through in beef heart and CoQ10.

Should I look for a supplement with spleen in it?

If iron is your goal, a supplement is the wrong tool regardless of which organ is in it — the serving size is the binding constraint, not the ingredient list. If you want spleen for the sake of a broader organ profile, look for a product that publishes how much of it you are getting, because most do not.
